Ancient Greece: Architectural Statuary

Nearly all sculptors were remunerated by the temples to adorn the elaborate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods up until the period came to a close and countless Greeks began to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more typical for sculptors to represent ordinary men and women as well. Sometimes, a depiction of affluent families' forefathers would be commissioned to be placed within huge familial burial tombs, and portraiture, which would be duplicated by the Romans upon their conquest of Greek civilization, also became customary. A point of aesthetic enhancement, the use of sculpture and other art forms morphed through the Greek Classical period, so it is inaccurate to say that the arts provided only one function. aq_78211__08842.jpg It could be the modern quality of Greek sculpture that grabs our awareness today; it was on a leading-edge practice of the ancient world regardless of whether it was created for religious reasons or aesthetic pleasure.

Attributes of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece

The first freestanding sculpture was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized success since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and naked. In around 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was an awesome time of change for the Greeks as they expanded into new modes of government, formed unique expressions of art, and achieved insights of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian wars, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the types of conflicts that emerged frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.

Do Pets Appreciate Water Fountains?

Give some thought to how your cat or dog may react to a water feature before you buy one. A pet dog or cat may think that a stand-alone fountain is a large pool or a drinking pond. Think about installing a water fountain in your backyard since it is a feature that will impact your much loved pets favorably. Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Troubles

Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, started out delivering the many people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had depended on natural springs up till then. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people living at higher elevations turned to water taken from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns.

Starting in the sixteenth century, a new method was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to generate water to Pincian Hill. The aqueduct’s channel was made accessible by pozzi, or manholes, that were situated along its length when it was initially created. While these manholes were created to make it much easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Even though the cardinal also had a cistern to collect rainwater, it didn’t provide sufficient water. By using an opening to the aqueduct that flowed under his property, he was able to reach his water desires.

Public Water Fountains in Berkley, Ca

In February 2014, a levy on sugar-sweetened beverages was approved in Berkley, CA, making it the first city in the United States to introduce such a regulation. The goal is to have men and women drinking more water and other natural drinks by increasing the price of soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks. The aim of the research was to evaluate the state of community drinking water fountains and figure out if there is a distinction in access to fresh, operating drinking fountains based on racial or economic components. Through data collected by a mobile GPS app, experts were able to identify the condition of active water fountains in Berkley. The US Census Community Study database was used to compile information related to race and economic status in these locations. Comparisons were made amongst the location and demographic data, showing whether class differences affected availability to clean, functional water fountains. Each water fountain and the demographics of its surrounding area were studied to reveal whether the location of the fountains or their standard of maintenance exhibited any link to income, race, or other points. Many of the water fountains were unclean or blocked, despite the fact that the majority of fountains worked.
